Sunday, September 9th – Day 4 (Homecoming)

It’s Sunday. I’ve gotten used to Dr. S arriving before 6:30 a.m. However, today he arrives after 7:30. It is a Sunday though, so no problem.

He checks the wound area and the sutures around the chest tube points. He’s checked my charts, and I’m good to go home.

Remember that I had surgery on Wednesday? It seems incomprehensible that I’m going home today. Really? But I feel good. Sure, on Day 4, my stamina is pitiful and energy levels are never high, but I’ve been making good progress on the incentive spirometer and can pull 2,250 ml. Up from 500 ml on Day 1!

I ask if my last connection to the medico-electronic world, the EKG leads, can be removed, and they are.

I’m writing this section eight days after that Sunday, and the places those leads were attached are the sorest places remaining other than the scar itself.

There has to be a thinner, just as good, disposable lead out there. Regional Hospital has such a tremendous investment in the latest technology. How much can a better EKG lead cost?
